Director, Engineering – Marketplace

The Marketplace team is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead a team of 40 engineers and applied scientists based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This team builds the technology and systems that span machine learning modeling and optimization for driver pricing.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead the team responsible for driver pricing and matching, spanning backend systems for pricing, offer generation, offer payments, machine learning models and algorithms, and mobile/front-end surfaces for driver comprehension.
• Build the long-term vision and technology for driver pricing.
• Collaborate closely with Data Science, Product, and Operations to drive and shape technical direction in systems and modeling frameworks.
• Strategize and influence the product vision and roadmap in collaboration with product and business teams.
• Build trust, foster a collaborative team culture, and help grow leaders in each focus area.
• Build a strong engineering brand for driver pricing to attract and retain top talent.
• Maintain executive presence to communicate the team’s vision and plan effectively, representing the engineering organization within the Marketplace business group.
• Translate the strategic roadmap into a practical execution plan with quarterly OKRs.
• Build an influential culture of engineering excellence while balancing speed and technical debt.
• Establish processes to handle ad hoc support requests without disturbing the general execution cycle.
• Develop an operational model to achieve operational excellence for product and engineering metrics.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• A minimum of 10 years of proven experience building software across the stack (mobile, platform, data pipelining, and machine learning) in product engineering.
• A minimum of 7 years of management experience leading software engineering teams.
• Experience leveraging optimization or machine learning in successful products.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
• Experience working with consumer-facing products.
• Experience with optimization and applied machine learning, including statistical modeling and problem formulation.
• Experience building scalable backend systems.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles, the base hourly rate amount is USD $35.00 per hour, and you will also be eligible for various benefits. Uber is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
