Sr Software Engineer

The Marketplace Segmentation team is currently seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help optimize Uber’s core rides business. In this role, you will strategically differentiate product offerings to cater to diverse rider needs and market conditions, working directly on critical products like UberX Priority and Wait & Save. Our team leverages advanced matching algorithms, dynamic pricing, and machine learning to balance marketplace supply and demand, enhance the rider experience, and drive incremental growth.

As a Senior Software Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Leading the technical design and execution of complex features and medium-sized projects that significantly impact our products and strategic initiatives.
• Driving architectural decisions and system improvements within your area of ownership to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Collaborating cross-functional with Product, Data Science, Operations, and other engineering teams to define technical solutions, evaluate trade-offs, and align on roadmaps.
• Solving ambiguous and challenging technical problems related to real-time matching, dynamic pricing, ML model integration, and complex user experience flows.
• Championing engineering best practices, including robust testing, monitoring, and operational excellence to maintain the health of production systems.
• Mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level engineers by providing technical leadership, design feedback, and professional development support.
• Contributing to the team’s long-term technical vision and helping prioritize projects based on technical feasibility and impact.

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following basic qualifications:

• Bring five or more years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, supported by a proven track record of leading significant projects.
• Demonstrate deep expertise in designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in a production environment.
• Possess a deep understanding of concurrency, fault tolerance, and performance optimization.
• Showcase strong analytical and problem-solving skills to break down complex challenges and build elegant solutions.
• Exhibit excellent communication and collaboration abilities to work effectively alongside diverse stakeholders.
• Have prior experience mentoring junior engineers and fostering a strong culture of technical excellence.

We are also interested in candidates who bring preferred qualifications such as direct experience with marketplace platforms, demand and supply forecasting, real-time optimization engines, machine learning system design and deployment, or familiarity with causal inference and experimentation platforms. Advanced degrees in Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields are also welcomed.

For Canada-based roles, the base salary range is CAD $173,000 per year to CAD $192,000 per year. Eligible employees may participate in the bonus program, receive equity awards, and access various company benefits. Please note that offices remain central to our collaboration and cultural identity, and employees are generally expected to spend at least half of their work time in their assigned office unless formally approved for a fully remote arrangement.
