Acute Care Surgery Clinical Fellowship

The Department of Surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine is currently seeking candidates for the Acute Care Surgery Clinical Fellowship. This one-year clinical fellowship is designed to prepare surgeons for clinical and academic excellence, aiming to ensure timely access to high-quality surgical rescue for all patients and populations within a culture of curiosity, exploration, and transformative patient care.

As a Clinical Instructor appointed to the fellowship, you will train at Stanford Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center serving a population of over 3 million people across Northern California. The clinical experience includes managing a high volume of annual trauma activations, emergency general surgery consults, and emergency operations under the mentorship of experienced trauma and acute care surgery faculty. Key responsibilities and opportunities include:

• Gaining escalating responsibility for the comprehensive care of complex trauma and emergency general surgery patients.
• Participating in dedicated chest wall and abdominal wall reconstruction programs, along with cross-training opportunities in high-volume cardiac and transplant services.
• Accessing state-of-the-art simulation and education technology laboratories to master advanced technical skills and crisis resource management.
• Engaging with clinical investigators across a wide spectrum of acute care surgery scholarship, including shock resuscitation, biodesign, robotics, clinical informatics, data science, artificial intelligence, trauma systems, health policy, and global health.
• Developing competencies in systems-based practice, quality improvement, organizational change, and strategic thinking by leading large multidisciplinary teams and participating in dedicated leadership curricula.
• Contributing to the educational mission by acting as an effective teacher and mentor for the next generation of surgeons.
• Option for an exchange program with trauma and acute care surgery fellows in Cape Town, South Africa.

Applicants must be board eligible or board certified in General Surgery and have successfully completed a fellowship in surgical critical care. The expected salary range for this Clinical Instructor position is $150,000 to $160,000, determined by experience, qualifications, training, internal equity, and external market pay.
