About this job

The Autonomous Mobility & Delivery (AM&D) team is building the systems that allow Uber to deliver safe and scalable autonomous mobility across the globe. Remote Assistance (RA) is a core capability that enables humans to interpret and support AV behavior in real time, building essential trust across the rider journey.

As a Staff Software Engineer for Remote Assistance, you will serve as a senior technical leader helping define and evolve the long-term architecture of Uber’s RA platform. You will work alongside the existing RA lead to take ownership of major technical domains, expanding capabilities across multiple autonomy partners, countries, and operational models. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong product instincts, and clear communication across all company levels.

What You Will Do:

  • Help define and evolve foundational RA architectures, including platforms for real-time data ingestion, autonomy state representation, operator workflow support, partner integration, and long-term scalability.
  • Work closely with engineering teams across AM&D, maps, infrastructure, and mobility experience to align RA capabilities with broader autonomy and rider experience priorities.
  • Collaborate directly with external autonomy companies to develop integration approaches, negotiate technical interfaces, and guide joint solutions that improve safety and operational clarity.
  • Drive major architectural initiatives preparing RA for increasing complexity, wider partner support, and global scale.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization and elevate engineering quality through strong design and architectural guidance.
  • Contribute to strategic communication, prepare technical updates for executives, document architectural decisions, and represent RA in cross-company technical forums.
  • Define instrumentation, establish KPIs, and use operational and user insights to guide continuous improvement in reliability, latency, decision quality, and operator clarity.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Seven or more years of software engineering experience, including substantial experience building large-scale backend systems.
  • Proven ability to set technical direction across teams and deliver high-quality distributed systems in production environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience designing or scaling real-time systems involving telemetry pipelines, operator-facing workflows, autonomy visualization, robotics platforms, or high-fidelity decision support systems.
  • Candidates with advanced academic training (such as a Master’s degree or PhD) or significant hands-on industry experience in autonomy operations, robotics infrastructure, remote assistance technologies, or real-time platforms are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Strong product sense and analytical rigor with the ability to define technical and experiential KPIs and drive measurable iteration.
  • Expertise in architectures supporting low-latency data flows, multi-modal sensor information, complex state modeling, and reliable service boundaries.
  • Experience guiding engineering excellence, including standards for testing, observability, incident response, and long-horizon architectural planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence in multi-team environments and collaborate with external autonomy companies.

Compensation and Location Details:

  • For San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA-based roles, the base salary range is USD $232,000 per year to USD $258,000 per year.
  • For all US locations, employees are eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award, 401(k) plan participation, and other company benefits.
  • Unless formally approved to work fully remotely, Uber expects employees to spend at least half of their work time in their assigned office.

Uber’s mission is to reimagine the way the world moves for the better. We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity employer, considering applicants without regard to sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, protected Veteran status, age, or any other characteristic protected by law.
