About this job

Uber’s Marketplace is at the heart of the business, and the Dynamic Supply Pricing (DSP) team develops the models, algorithms, signals, and large-scale distributed systems that power real-time driver pricing for billions of rides. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for Marketplace Pricing, you will work on cutting-edge marketplace ML problems and real-time multi-objective optimizations serving over one million predictions per second. This role offers the opportunity to present high-impact opportunities to executive stakeholders and receive close mentorship from senior engineers, setting you up for fast-tracked career growth.

You will be responsible for leading the design, development, and productionization of advanced machine learning models and pricing algorithms, covering deep learning, causal modeling, and reinforcement learning. You will collaborate closely with product managers, scientists, and other engineers to set the team’s technical direction and solve complex business problems that support earnings opportunities for millions of drivers worldwide.

What you will do in this role:

  • Drive technical strategy and roadmap ownership over a long-term horizon, including platform-level architecture decisions, executive communication, technical mentorship, and cross-team technical influence.
  • Lead the design, development, and productionization of end-to-end machine learning solutions for large-scale distributed systems serving billions of trips.
  • Develop novel pricing approaches for online marketplaces by combining machine learning, algorithmic game theory, and optimization.
  • Work alongside cross-functional teams to design and deliver high-impact technical solutions to complex business challenges.

Basic qualifications required for this position include:

  • A Ph.D., M.S., or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research, or an equivalent technical background with demonstrated impact.
  • At least 6 years of experience leading the development and deployment of ML models and optimization algorithms in large-scale production environments at top-tier companies, accompanied by a strong track record of delivering business impact over multiple quarters.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Scala, Java, or Go.
  • Experience with large-scale data systems like Spark or Ray, real-time processing tools like Flink, and microservices architectures.
  • Strong expertise in developing, training, productionizing, and monitoring ML solutions at scale, spanning offline pipelines to online serving and MLOps.
  • Practical experience developing and deploying pricing algorithms for multi-sided real-time marketplaces with strategic agent behavior.
  • A deep understanding of modern ML algorithms, such as DNNs, multi-task models, and transformers, alongside mathematical optimization techniques like multi-objective, LP, and convex optimization.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience developing multi-year technical strategies and cross-team platform architecture, owning technical roadmaps, and leading complex projects that influence others.
  • A proven track record of translating complex business problems into technical solutions and driving multi-functional initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills to lead initiatives across multiple product areas.
  • Proficiency in reinforcement learning and causal machine learning.

Compensation and work environment details:

  • For roles based in New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, and Sunnyvale, CA, the base salary range is USD $232,000 per year to USD $258,000 per year.
  • Eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, with potential equity awards and other types of compensation.
  • Full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan and various other company benefits.
  • Unless formally approved to work fully remotely, employees are expected to spend at least half of their work time in their assigned office to support collaboration and team culture.
