About this job
At Aurukun State School (also known as Koolkan Aurukun Community School), we cater to current enrolments of approximately 200 students from Kindy to Year 12. Our students are active learners who come from a rich cultural and linguistic background. We are seeking a Deputy Principal (Primary) to join our team for the remainder of 2026 unless otherwise determined.
The school is located on the west coast of Cape York, around 11 hours’ drive from Cairns and two hours’ drive south of Weipa, serving the remote community of Aurukun. This is a full-time position with the Queensland Government, based at the school’s campus in the Aurukun area (listed under Manoora, Cairns for recruitment purposes).
As Deputy Principal (Primary), you will support the Principal in the leadership and management of the primary phase of the school. Typical responsibilities in this kind of remote community school setting may include:
- Assisting with the day-to-day administration and operation of the primary school section.
- Supporting teaching and learning programs that recognise and build on students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Providing leadership and guidance to primary teaching staff.
- Contributing to the creation of a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for students from Kindy through to the upper primary years.
- Working collaboratively with community members, families, and school leadership to support student wellbeing and attendance.
- Helping to implement school improvement initiatives and departmental priorities.
This role suits an experienced educator with a commitment to working in a remote Indigenous community and a respect for the local culture and language. The successful applicant will be expected to work on site in Aurukun for the duration of the temporary appointment.
As this is a Queensland Government school role, standard public sector employment conditions apply. Relocation or accommodation arrangements for remote placements are generally handled in line with departmental policy, though specific details should be confirmed with the employer during the recruitment process.
