About this job

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today, SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. As part of this mission, SpaceX is leveraging its experience building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world’s most advanced broadband internet system, providing fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide.

In true SpaceX fashion, Starlink is taking the next step in vertical integration by bringing advanced silicon packaging and assembly in-house. We are looking for a hands-on, creative, and driven Lead Automation and Controls Engineer to spearhead automation for our internal advanced silicon packaging lines. In this role, you will architect and scale automation systems designed to meaningfully reduce user terminal costs and mitigate global supply chain risks, delivering high-impact technology on a massive scale.

Key responsibilities for the Lead Automation and Controls Engineer include:

  • Leading a multi-disciplinary engineering team that architects and optimizes high-output factories of the future.
  • Setting the bar for technical excellence, recruiting top engineering talent, and creating continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Challenging the team to develop new processes and deploy entire factories rapidly while maintaining high machine reliability and safety standards.
  • Collaborating closely with automation, mechanical, process, safety, production, and maintenance leadership to identify high-impact projects.
  • Ensuring a strong focus on safety to maintain an excellent operational safety record.

Basic qualifications required for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in an automation engineering role.
  • Ability to meet U.S. Government export regulations (ITAR requirements).

Preferred skills and experience that will help you succeed in this role include:

  • Prior experience leading engineers and technicians, providing technical direction, mentorship, and roadmap tracking.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts clearly across a fast-paced organization and interface effectively with equipment suppliers.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor industry work, including SECS/GEM protocols, MES integration, and SEMI standards.
  • Expertise in motion systems design, electrical sizing, fail-safe electrical circuit design, and commissioning high-quality electro-mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with PLC programming (preferably Beckhoff TwinCAT structured text), fieldbus networking protocols, HMI, SCADA, and Ignition systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant standards and codes such as ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and UL508A.

Additional requirements include the ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary to support critical milestones, as well as the ability to travel up to 20% to other sites and international suppliers. SpaceX is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace.
