L3Harris is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Thermal Analyst to join our talented engineering organization as a Lead, Thermal Mechanical Engineer for Space Systems. In this technical leadership role, you will work across multidisciplinary teams of engineers to create the best overall system design, including the thermal design, analysis, and test of optical systems operating in harsh space and ground environments. You will bring an in-depth understanding of aerospace thermal engineering technology and payload architectures to direct and oversee teams specializing in conductive, convective, and radiative analyses.
Essential functions of the role include system-level thermal design and development, payload-level integration and test, and risk mitigation for space-based environments. You will perform thermal design and analysis tasks on complex mechanical hardware—such as precision mechanisms, electro-mechanical devices, complex electronics packaging, and deployable mechanisms—utilizing state-of-the-art custom software, Thermal Desktop, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) packages. Additional responsibilities involve requirements derivation, trade studies, organizing thermal design as an IPT lead, preparing formal documentation and presentation materials for PDR, CDR, and TIM reviews, and mentoring junior-level engineers.
Qualifications for this position include a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering/science field with a minimum of 9 years of prior relevant experience, a Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of experience, or a minimum of 13 years of related experience in lieu of a degree. Candidates must possess at least 7 years of professional experience using thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, Sinda, Flotherm, or Icepak, along with 4+ years of technical leadership experience guiding multi-disciplinary teams through design, analysis, test, and hardware delivery. Professional experience with thermal vacuum testing and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS/SCI Security Clearance are required.
Preferred additional skills include familiarity with FEA software, proven root-cause problem-solving abilities, and experience serving as a lead engineer or IPT lead.
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater D.C., Denver, or NYC areas is $122,000.00 – $227,000.00. Final offer amounts may vary based on factors including experience and geographic location.
